While Art Byrne focusses here on the time-based competitive advantage, there are many more possibilities. The lean team can work on better understanding and translating customer needs into hard-hitting business benefits; examples are customer delivery needs, design options, application support, or product / service functionality. And, improving quality is still a winning approach.

However, all these great rewards open up only after the manager divorces him/herself from narrow, siloed metrics such as productivity as the one and only measure for success.
