Max, thanks for your comments and nice additions to the post. You are correct most traditionally run companies are not used to the idea of a learning organization that requires leaders to learn by doing and participate as a team in both how the company is run and how rewards are earned.

The common lessons learned by both of us starting with early experiences and training have proven to be beneficial in every business and governmental sector that I have worked. As the first American Senior Manager asked to oversee the building and management of Toyota Industrial Equipment, many of the practices you spell out so clearly had to be learned by people who were not used to such a culture. The primary focus on learning, leadership participation and inclusive reward structures were practiced then and are still fundamental in every client engagement that I have led since then (1987 – 1995).

Ovi, thanks for your comments. You learned lean at the Art Byrne school of lean so you understand this very well. Your point about moral going through the roof is also spot on. This happens every time and is the key to creating a lean culture. When people participate in multiple kaizens they are excited about the changes that can be made and as a result you won’t loose any key people. Job satisfaction trumps money every time.

What I found while executing kaizen is besides the very tangible business benefits coming out of this activity, employee morale goes through the roof. So instead of paying big money for employee engagement surveys and action plans, companies better genuinely engage in kaizen…
